First of all, WOW, what a site. Looks like a very well run place to get very good and detailed answers. I just hope you can help me. I did some reading on here about this antivermin thing going around. Sounds pretty common and a real pain in the butt to get rid of. I have all the same things that everybody else seems to have: blue and white question mark icon in the tool bar, links to this antivermin site, nothing else seems to get rid of it, ect.

Every thread I've read on here always starts out with the hijack this post, so I was going to do that. But I am pretty new to this kind of stuff, and wanted to start at step one and not get ahead of my self. So where do we start?

Hi, BArkat. :)

Welcome to TSG.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.

  4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Perform the following steps in safe mode:

  2. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  4. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.

  5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware .
While in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab, then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

* Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" Delete everything except for "My Current Home Page". Click OK then Apply and OK.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post a fresh Hijackthis log along with the AVG Anti-spyware report, ActiveScan report and contents of C:\rapport.txt produced by Smitfraudfix.

I have no idea what just happened! I was being VERY careful to follow your instructions to the letter. I got all the stuff down loaded and made it to the safe mode part.I was running the AVG Anti spyware, and it came up with 32 infections. I selected "Apply all actions". Then I hit the "reports" button. This is the strange part, there were no reports! Even the "save reports as" button was all grey, so you couldnt hit it. Also I couldnt find out how to exit out of the program, there wae no exit button, no "X" in the corner, nothing. What I finally did was hit the alt, ctrl, delete buttons. When the computer fired back up, in normal mode, the blinking "system alert" icon is gone. So now Im lost! Is it fixed? Should I run another Hijack this report? Or just smack it with a hammer? Any ideas?

To be sure, you will need to repeat the processes above and post back the reports. Do not disturb any of these processes as the results may be adverse.

While I was waiting for a reply, I did so careful looking around. I did find four program files with "video active X object" and one program file with "cthkpvc.dll" all in the AVG anti virus quarantine. I dont know what they are, but I have seen that they seem to be causeing alot of problems. I figured you would know what to do with them better than I would. Also here is the latest hijack this logfile.

Well, I made it a little bit farther.I did get AVG Anti-Spyware to run and I got the report. When I got to the Smitfraudfix part it would not clean the registry. I got a error message saying "Cannot import cleanup.reg: error assessing the registry" I did try this step three or four times all with the same results. Here are all the reports I got.

Hi, BArkat :)

Download ComboFix from Here or Here. to your Desktop.

Reboot to Safe mode:

Restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard just before Windows starts to load. If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Perform the following actions in Safe Mode.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Download the enclosed file. Save and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a folder containing a Registry Entries file, Regfix.reg . Once extracted, open the folder and double click on the Regfix.reg file and select Yes when prompted to merge it into the registry.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...up1.0.0.15.cab

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close Hijackthis.

Click here to download WinPFind .
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Dont do anything with it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

  • Double click WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete, restart the computer back in Normal Mode.
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next reply!

Well, I tried that, and it froze up. I was running the WinPfind program, screen just froze up, didnt move for over half an hour, light on the computer stop blinking, and wasnt making any noise at all, like I said for about half an hour. I need to go to bed now for work tomorrow. I will try again tomorrow. Just wanted to keep you posted. Also I did notice the the AVG anti spyware icon on the tool bar, has lost all of its color. Now its just grey and black. May not be a big deal, just wanted you to be aware of it in case it was a big deal.

Hi, BArkat

Please create a Restore point:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "Before VirusScan", then click Create.

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modifying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.

Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot preform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry
  1. Go Here and download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  2. Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  3. Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  4. Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  6. Press OK
  7. Press YES to create the folder.
Registry Modifications

Download the enclosed file. Save and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a folder containing a Registry Entries file, Deskfix.reg . Once extracted, open the folder and double click on the Deskfix.reg file and select Yes when prompted to merge it into the registry.

Restart the computer.
Le me know about if that made a difference.

Um, well, we have another problem. There is no "system restore" in the "system tools". there is a "backup". Is that the same thing? May sound like a stupid question, just trying not to mess anything else up.

Sorry, BArkat

Disregard System Restore. It is not a vailable in Windows 2000. Just use ERUNT and backup your registry.
