Hi guys,

I'm getting the Adult Friend Finder Popup, it only occurred then, and I believe it is because of a process taskmnger.exe (this is different to the task manager taskmger.exe process). I allowed it to access the internet through Zone Alarm, hence the popup occurred. This is my HJT log.

Hey there, welcome to TSG

It is a good idea to print off these instructions:
This will be useful as there is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available.
You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
A print out of the instructions would be a good reference to make sure you don't yet lost.
Also, it is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and also that you don't miss any steps out!
If you have any queries about the process or just general questions, just ask.

taskmngr.exe is a process which is registered as RBOT.Y Worm.
This virus is distributed via the Internet through e-mail and comes in the form of an e-mail message, in the hopes that you open its hostile attachment. The worm has its own SMTP engine which means it gathers E-mails from your local computer and re-distributes itself. In worst cases this worm can allow attackers to access your computer, stealing passwords and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system. Please see additional details regarding this process.

Due to the status of some of the files you have on your computer, I strongly recommend that you do the following immediately. Disconnect the infected computer from the internet until the computer can be cleaned. From a clean computer, change your online passwords-- for email, for banks, eBay, forums etc.... Do not change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information.

You have FlashGet installed.
Be aware that the trial copy bundles Cydoor adware, but when you register the Ads disappear.
To remove the program: Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove it.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O2 - BHO: IeCatch5 Class - {2F364306-AA45-47B5-9F9D-39A8B94E7EF7} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\jccatch.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right)
Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.
Choose 'delete a file on reboot'
In the field, copy and paste next:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmngr.exe

Click open.
Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now.
When asked if you want to reboot now, say Yes.

Download and save Blacklight to your desktop.
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
Click on scan then click next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Do not choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first; legitimate items can also be present.
There is a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.
Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Also post the Blacklight log.

Hey there, the log is looking much better, let's continue...

I want you to clean your cache and cookies from your internet explorer.
There are a few infected files which need to be removed from your system.

° Close all instances of Internet Explorer .
° Go to your control panel and open "Internet Options".
° Click on the "General" tab.
° Click the "Delete Cookies" button, then the "Delete Files" button.
° When prompted, place a tick in the "Delete all offline content" box and click OK.

Also, please clean other Temporary files and Empty the Recycle Bin

° Go to start and click on the "run" button.
° Type the following in the fox --> cleanmgr and click ok.
° Let it scan your system for files to remove.
° Make sure only Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are checked.
° Press OK to remove them.

Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right)
Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.
Choose 'delete a file on reboot'
In the field, copy and paste next:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\oreans32.sys

Click open.
Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now.
When asked if you want to reboot now, say Yes.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"
Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log.

At the moment it does look as though we have been able to remove the infection.
Blacklight came clean, so nothing should be hiding from us at this stage.
After you have deleted the oreans32.sys file, you should be ok to redo passwords etc.
If you want to be 100%, I'd wait until I give you the all-clear in a few posts time.
Kaspersky might uncover some new files we haven't seen yet..

The Kaspersky log looks fine, just some entries found in quarantine folders.
You might have downloaded a corrupted/infected mIRC copy, I recommend you delete it:
D:\Install Files\Applications\P2P Install Files\mirc617.exe

After you've done that, I would say you are good to go.
How is the PC running now, I see clean logs.
You can go back to doing things online with passwords etc..

Hey David,

The mirc file was downloaded from the official site so I don't understand how it can be infected. Nonetheless, I have deleted it. The PC is running fine now, there have been no more popups =)

Also, may I ask how does the virus transmit private data? Does it work from keylogging or just obtaining passwords? Because if it only keylogs, then I don't need to worry except for online banking, which I've already taken care of on another PC. All my passwords are already default saved in Firefox.

Once again, thank you very much for your help David. I am extremely grateful for the time and effort you have put in to help me.

Kind regards,
poopehz

Yes, some files are keyloggers, which means they can trace what you have typed on the keyboard. They then connect to outside computers and transmit the data they have collected along with the sites you have visted, so they can tell what your passwords are. Some files are classified as backdoors, which means they open up ports on your PC and allow hackers to enter your PC and steal information and connect to other sites. These are quite rare, but as you can see from your log you did have a backdoor trojan. As long as you have changed your important passwords, such as your bank accounts I think you should be safe. It is more of a precautionary measure, and you will notice that many people on this forum have similar infections.

Glad I could help! :)
The latest log is looking clean!
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will be reduced dramatically.

Use an Anti Virus Software -
* It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine.
* This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
* Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
* I would recommend Grisoft's AVG or AVAST.
* These are the more secure and better ones.

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall -
* I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
* Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over.
* Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
* For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
* Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
* I would recommend ZoneAlarm as a firewall as it's easy to use.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently -
* It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
* This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
* If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly

Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy- Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
* This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
* You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.
* A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install Lavasofts© Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware.
* You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot.
* A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster -
* SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
* A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

If you have any addition questions just ask...
David

Haha thanks for that mate. I've already got all of them installed
But somehow I was still infected by that virus. You stated that it spreads through an email, however, I don't recall opening any sort of attachments with my emails at all so I am quite perplexed to see that virus on my computer. However, I'm glad its gone now. Thank you very much for your time and effort in helping me.

I think I'll mark it as solved so I won't confuse any other helping members.

Regards,
Nick

Happy New Year Trojan! It's NY here in Australia :)

I have another question I'd like to ask you. Sometimes my Zone Alarm disables itself and I must close it and re-run the program in order to get the firewall up and running again. This happens rarely but it still does and I was wondering if you could give me any ideas as to why?

Once again, thanks!
