I suggest that you go back to visual effects settings and change the settings to Custom, and uncheck all the boxes. Reboot. Go back and select "Use drop shadows.." and whichever others you need/want. The more you select, the bigger the load on explorer, and the bigger the load, the longer the time required to display. Reboot again. I don't know why but sometimes this is what it takes for explorer to get the details right.

Good luck, and post back with your progress.

Download and install the very popular Freeware Iconoid.

It will do that and much more.

Iconoid is a Windows desktop icon manager.

* Make icon backgrounds transparent
* Select any color for icon backgrounds
* Save and Restore Icon positions for each (or every) screen resolution
* Select any color for icon text
* Automatically or manually select the best color for the text background
* Dynamically hide icons when you don't need them and show them when you do
* Quickly minimize all windows so that you can see your desktop wallpaper.
* See the help files (which include screen shots) for even more information.

:) Merry Christmas! :)

Ok, you need to disable Active Desktop then (unless you prefer to leave it enabled).

You did say your OS is XP right?

1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Open Display Properties.
3. Click the Desktop tab.
4. Click the Customize Desktop button.
5. Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.

To enable Active Desktop:
If you wish to enable the Active Desktop, check "My Current Home Page". Add your current home page into your desktop or click New to add another web page and/or other Active Desktop features. To update the content, click the Synchronize button.

To disable Active Desktop:
If you wish to disable Active Desktop, make sure all checkboxes in this window are
un-checked.

reboot

Try installing Iconoid now.

Let us know how it goes.

:)
