I bought a computer and it has no floppy. I have ordered one because I have a Partition Magic 8.0 and need a recovery disk. Just curious. Would it be possible to make an extended drive on a hard drive, name it A drive and do the same thing?

No, but many programs can be put onto bootable CDs. Newer programs offer the ability to create a CD from within the program rather then a floppy, and ones that do not you can use a CD burning program to create a bootable CD with from the floppy(although you'll need to do it on a computer with a floppy drive. Or get a $5 floppy.

I keep a floppy drive around, and also a conventional one. Many MB's still have floppy interfaces, even though systems are dropping floppies in many cases.

It's worthwhile to note that during the install, XP refuses to load 3rd party SCSI/RAID drivers from anything but a genuine floppy, a USB floppy doesn't work. :(
