Hey guys, I'd like to first apologize if this is in the wrong area of the forums, I'm new to TechGuy.
Grandma has a Dell Desktop(no specific model), but she was using her computer and it immediately shut off on her. She tried to turn it back on and got 4 brief beeps back to back. (beep beep beep beep........beep beep beep beep........etc etc). Tried looking for common issues, so far I'm concerned it might be either the motherboard or memory failure. Any tips will help, thanks in advance.

Howdy,

Could be Video card or onboard Video card

Memory....take out all the memory and startup and see if the beeps change

It also could be Powersupply...but I would try the memory first
First things first, thanks for taking the time to respond. Just a few questions now, sorry in advance if these are annoying.
Video Card: Would video card failure prevent the entire system from booting up? If so, since it's an integrated board, if the video card is faulty, is there a way to manually disable it without going into BIOS.
Memory: HD and RAM or just RAM? If I didn't have a spare HD with an OS on it, is there a way to boot up without the HD?
Power Supply: Not doubting the advice, would power failure even get the beep as a response? Based on my past experience with a bad power supply, the unit wouldn't even turn on let alone beep.

As a side note, I'm not doubting anyone by asking questions, just trying to learn more so I hope no one takes any offense to my questions.
Thanks again for any and all input.

Asking questions is a good ...but just taking out all the memory and starting up to see if the beeps change would get us started on the problem.

Now to answer your questions in order.

"Would video card failure prevent the entire system from booting up?"
Yes if it is a video hardware failure.

"If the video card is faulty, is there a way to manually disable it without going into BIOS?"
Yes there maybe a place in Bios to disable the on-board graphics, but a lot of motherboards will automatically disable it when you install a standalone video card.

"If I didn't have a spare HD with an OS on it, is there a way to boot up without the HD?"
Not really you need a HD to boot from...you can use a program like ubuntu that will boot from a CD drive that may enable you to access the HD.

"Would power failure even get the beep as a response?"
Yes..the power supply may not have completely failed just not supplying the correct voltage the PC expects thus the PC may start with fans and lights but will not boot.

Try taking out all memory and see if the beep code change first.

Thanks Mega and everyone else.
Took a look at it today, must've been a loose component. Needless to say, took it apart and put it back together, seems to work fine now. Removed all the components in order until it went from a 4 beep code to a 2 beep code to eventually just the single beep on boot up. Ran diagnostics and everything seems to check out. Either way, it works now. Thanks all!
