Solved: 2nd Opinion Plz....HJT Log Attached

I have been working on this laptop for a week and think I have it mostly cleaned up. It belongs to my boss and was previously not running any type of antispyware programs. It was running McAfee antivirus. I removed SmitFraud, CoolWebSearch and several other virus and malware problems.

I'm concerned about the HJT 017 entries and also the 020 and 023 (file missing) entries. I was unsure what to do about those. The owner of the PC doesn't know if he uses Microsoft SQL Server. As far as he knows, he doesn't. I was unsure whether or not removal was wise.

I'd like a more expert opinion as to whether or not any serious problems still exist. The PC will now run and seems to be okay. AVG (Ewido) online scans turn up no problems; however Panda turns up this error:

Welcome to TSG.

Please print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from Here or Here.

  1. Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
  2. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  3. Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.
Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only", and place a check next to the following items (if found):

Click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis.
  1. Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  2. Then right click on your Default Connection
    • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL, or AOL Connection.
  3. Left click on Properties
  4. Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
  5. Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
  6. Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen
  7. Restart the computer
Go to Start->Run->Type CMD and click Ok. The MSDOS Window will be displayed. At the command prompt, type the following and press Enter after each line:

ipconfig /flushdns (The space between g and / is needed)
Exit

Restart the computer.

Finally, please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

I don't know if this is relative to the virus/trojan infection the PC had or not, but System Restore does not function. Some preliminary research has indicated that this could be a problem with a MS patch gone awry. I have found these files on the HD relative to Microsoft KB927978 (MSXML).

C:\7345008f80196be6cab3d6a1 <-- this is the one relative to MSXML. There is a logfile in this subdirectory if it would help to see it. It's pretty much jibberish to me.

The log looks clear. Fix the following line in Hijackthis.

Reinstall System Restore:

  1. Click Start, Run and type %Windir%\INF
  2. Locate the SR.INF file. If you have configured Windows Explorer to hide known file extensions, the file may show up as SR. To see the file extensions for all file types, then try this:
    • On the Tools menu in My Computer, click Folder Options.
    • Click the View tab.
    • Clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.
    • Right-click the SR.INF file, and then click Install
  3. Windows will now attempt to reinstall System Restore, and may prompt you for the Windows installation source path. Point to %Windir%\ServicePackFiles folder, or insert your slipstreamed Windows XP (matching the Service Pack level of your system.)
  4. System Restore core files will be reinstalled. Restart Windows when prompted.

Keep me posted.

That file is legit. Usually installed with antimalware tools.

How is the computer doing?

It seems to be doing fine. I can't get System Restore to reinstall....but that's because I need to get the original XP media since the System installation files aren't on the hard disk. I won't be able to do that until my boss comes to pick up the system. The biggest problem I had was getting Kaspersky off the system. He had installed 3 AV programs and they were conflicting in a major way.

He is a person who enjoys using programs such as limewire (which I've removed and warned him against). Is there a safe way to use P2P programs such as this?

I have anti spyware/anti malware apps such as Spyware Blaster, AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Windows Defender and online scanners bookmarked like Ewido, TrendMicro Housecall, etc) on his PC.

Your help is most appreciated.....Bubblz

No. Many peer-to-peer networks are under constant attack by people with a variety of motives.

Examples include:
  • poisoning attacks (e.g. providing files whose contents are different than the description)
  • denial of service attacks (attacks that may make the network run very slowly or break completely)
  • defection attacks (users or software that make use of the network without contributing resources to it)
  • insertion of viruses to carried data (e.g. downloaded or carried files may be infected with viruses or other malware)
  • malware in the peer-to-peer network software itself (e.g. distributed software may contain spyware)
  • filtering (network operators may attempt to prevent peer-to-peer network data from being carried)
  • identity attacks (e.g. tracking down the users of the network and harassing or legally attacking them)
  • spamming (e.g. sending unsolicited information across the network- not necessarily as a denial of service attack)
There is no safe way to run these programs. Look at it like this. On a Centralized Network each computer repond to a dedicated Server. On a Non Centralized Network, such as a P2P Network, all computers serve as Servers, thus information is always being shared, whether is good or bad. That's what makes the diference.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

Create a Restore point:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

Thanks for the advice on P2P software. It's what I keep preaching to him as well. Maybe he'll listen this time. Believe me *I* know how he got infected. LOL

Is there a safe way to test System Restore once it's reinstalled?

That all depends if the OS CD came with SP2 or your needed to download SP2. If SP2 was part of the Installation CD, the folder [BServicePackFiles [/B] should not appear under Windows. You will be better off waiting for the Installation CD.

Apparently the PC came with SP2 pre-installed because there's no {BServicePackFiles} on the hard disk. Soooo I guess I'll wait for the original disk.
