sndvol32 has disapperared along with the sound to my computer.
The volume icon disappeared on the task bar along with my sound. My computer says sndvol32 .exe is missing.

How do I get it back?

Generous of XP to help you out like that; Win98 would have offered nothing.

Go to the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Select the "Windows Components" option on the left. Then select "Accessories"/Details > "Multimedia"/Details.

You will see the sound volume there. If checked uncheck it and click "apply". Then recheck it and click "apply" and "OK". You may be prompted for a CD, or not.

Create folder on your c: called SP1. Download the full SP1 from this link.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/4/f/54f8bcf8-bb4d-4613-8ee7-db69d01735ed/xpsp1a_en_x86.exe

When asked where to save it to, use c:\SP1. When finished, extract the files by clicking on

Start-->Run, type C:\SP1\xpsp1a_en_x86.exe -x.

When it prompts for a location, make sure it says c:\SP1. When it is completed, you can use System File Checker to check for corrupted system files and replace them.

Start-->Run type in sfc /scannow.

If it prompts you for an install disk, you can point to the c:\SP1 file or the c:\i386 file.

After this is complete, you can install SP1 by clicking on the file named

xpsp1a_en_x86.exe
