$1-a-pack hike in cigarette tax a few days away in Texas. This will place the price per pack at about $4.50.

I sure am glad I gave them up over 30 something years ago.

This is a list of the taxes from the states surrounding Texas.

HOW WE STACK UP

Cigarette excise taxes

per pack:

•Texas $1.41

Neighboring states:

•Oklahoma $1.03

•New Mexico 91 cents

•Arkansas 59 cents

•Louisiana 36 cents

Looks like all the gamblers that smoke and have to travel down I-10 to gamble will be able to recoup some of their losses by buying smokes on the way back.;)

I will have to check with Wino but it might be cheaper to just smoke a doobie.:D

Its an addiction so I assume that most smokers will keep paying.
I have a brother-in-law who is drawing disability because of impaired lungs(supposedly from asbestos) and nearly on oxygen and he still can't give them up. I almost had an asthma attack the last time we visited his house.

I know it is hard to give up any addiction as I am a longtime practicing alcoholic who finally quit on my own 21 years ago this January.

I think the desire to truly give up the addiction has to be forefront in the treatment. All the meetings and counseling in the world will not work if the desire to quit is not there.

It's getting close to a push.;) Creating a great job market for smugglers from LA. & Mexico, just throw in 10 cases of cigs with their MJ = increased profits for them. Typical bureaucratic thinking (oxymoron).

I quit buying ready rolls four or so years ago when a carton of Luckies hit $40. My previous years experience in hand rolling came in very handy for the transition to Bugler. :p

Merry Christmas to you and yours Sir Deke.

You remember those old rollers you could put the paper and Bugler on then slide it across and you had a ready roll.

Merry Christmas to you and yours Wino.

Off to my daughter's in League City for lunch.

We stopped buying ready rolled cigarettes a couple of years ago because of the cost. Now we use a supermatic cigarette machine with premier tubes and bulk tobacco. Costs about one dollar per pack to roll our own.

Springfield (state capitol), and Champaign/Urbana (college towns) have passed smoking bans, banning smoking in all buildings including restaurants and bars. I understand it is severly hurting the bar's businesses. Other towns and/or counties are considering similar bans.

Restrictions on smoking were/are completely reasonable whenever the motive or purpose is to protect non-smokers from exposure to tobacco smoke and to keep common areas free of tobacco residue and odor. However the passion of anti smoking people is starting to go way beyond that now.

Driving is also an addiction in the western world.

Fortunately I don't drive

Graph shows price per litre ( 4.5 l = 1 gallon.)

http://www.whatprice.co.uk/car/local-petrol-prices.php

Wait till you start paying $7 a gallon.

 :p
Ours is about $2.15 a gallon at the moment.

I guess if I was paying $7 a gallon I would cut way back on my trips to town.

Here's the thing, in June next year, a smoking ban in England ( already in place in Ireland and Scotland) will prohibit smoking in any bar, club, pub, or restaurant.

Undoubtedly a majority support this move on health grounds, as well as the anti social aspects of eating in a smoke filled room.

However any mention of curtailing car use with legislation, is met with animated, vocal opposition. Indeed it is considered by politicians to be enough of a vote loser... to merit not implementing such a policy ... so much for health - or global warming.

Strange how car drivers who see their own city shrouded in a blue haze seem to think that that is there as a result of cigarette smoking pedestrians.

Sorry, but I am not with you on the banning of everything that you think is unhealtful or bad for the planet. I consider all of you a form of "nazi". The tobacco "nazis" have been at it longer and are much more successful, but the new "trans-fat nazis" are moving up the list, as are the SUV "nazis" and all the others who think they should be allowed to tell everyone else how to live because they are obviously smarter and more concerned about the earth than anyone else is. A pox on all of you!!

I don't smoke and don't exactly like tobacco smoke in my face, but that is my problem and I do not have the right to control everyone else's vices. I have enough to worry about with my own vices to control. Live and let live and otherwise, please just shut up!
