Slow startup, freezes up and other issues

Hi,
I have a Dell Dimension 4600 that I use mainly for watching TV and email. I've had it for 3 or 4 years now and lately it has not been operating smoothly. When I first start it it takes quite a while to start and when it does come up it does not run smoothly. Sometimes it will lock up and I have to press the power button until it powers down. Other times I will just restart it. When I do restart it almost every time I get a black screen (after the Dell splash screen) with the Dell info and then "Secondary drive 0 not found. Press F1 to continue, F2 to enter setup." I press F1 and the domputer then starts normally and usually runs much better. Following is the Sysinfo log. It says I don't have an antivirus running but I am running Norton Internet Security. I don't know if I have an infection or some other issue. Any help you can supply would be appreciated. I am trying to avoid reinsatlling the OS.

Tedley,

I m sad to hear the issue.. The reason is microsoft has withdrawn the support for Windows XP flavors. So I recommed you to upgrade to Windows 7.
Moreover, you may experience more Security issues now if you move with XP.

Please refer the below link : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows/end-support-help

Inorder to migrate to Windows 7 or upgrade, please follow the below link :
http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/enterprise/end-of-support.aspx

Hope, this solves the issue.

Thanks in advance,
Darius James [josedarius16]

tedley:

The motherboard in the Dell Dimension 4600 desktop has 4 slots and supports a maximum of 4 GB(4096 MB) of RAM, so you should seriously consider increasing it to 2 GB(2048 MB) or maxing it out.

It uses these modules:

184-pin, DDR PC2700(DDR333), 2.5 volt, CL=2.5, unbuffered, non-ECC

184-pin, DDR PC3200(DDR400), 2.6 volt, CL=3.0, unbuffered, non-ECC

Adding more RAM is one of the best and most cost-effective ways to improve speed and performance in an old computer.

Running Norton Internet Security in it with only 1 GB(1024 MB) of RAM is going to slow it down.

We don't know how you use that computer and what you have installed and running in it, so there can be a number of other reasons for the slowness.

The first 2 things I look for is too many running processes and an infestation of malware, spyware, etc..

Go here and click the large green "Download" button to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.5 (HijackThis.exe) to your desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows.

Double-click it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log file here.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Go here, then click the large blue "Download Now @ Bleeping Computer" button to download and save AdwCleaner.exe to your desktop.

Close all open windows first, then double-click AdwCleaner.exe to load its main window.

Click the "Scan" button, then allow the scanning process to finish.

Click the "Report" button.

When the log appears, save it.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log here.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for helping me. I have been thinking about upgrading memory, just don't know if I want to put any money into this machine. It was woarking fine until a few months ago. Started acting up before Microsoft stopped supporting it so I don't think that is the issue as the other reply suggested. I use this for watching TV' Hulu, etc. I do use it for streaming stuff through Stream Torrent but have been doing that for years without any problems. I do use a screen magnifying software, ZoonText, as I am visually inpaired and use this to make it easier to use a computer. I had been using version 9.0 and recently installed 10.0 and it seems that is when problems started. I uninstalled both versions, reinstalled version 9.0 but still have been having issues. The problem isn't really slowness when the system is running but rather breif freezes and sometimes total freeze ups. I know I updated the video driver on my other Dell, at the recomendation of ZoomText, so ZoomText 10.0 would run better. I think I may have done it on this system also but I can't remember. If I remember correctly, the problems I'm having started around the time I installed ZoonText 10.0 so is it possible I'm having video driver issues?

In the mean time here are the HiJack This and Adwcleaner logs.
Again, thanks for any help you can provide.

Although most of the current ones can be stopped from auto-loading and running, your computer has a small startup load, so that's not an obvious reason for the slowness.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The AdwCleaner "Scan" and "Report" found several threats, so a "Scan" and "Clean" needs to be done so they can be deleted.

After the computer restarts and the log is displayed, copy-and-paste it here.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Open the computer case and examine the processor heatsink/cooling unit.

If it's packed with dust, hair, etc., it needs to be blown out.

A clogged unit will overheat the processor and cause it to run at a slower speed to keep from overheating.

It can also cause the computer to freeze up and have other issues.

If I remember correctly, I had one of that model here to "service".
I was not very impressed with it as, even "clean" the performance was lower than I expected or than it should have been. (just an observation)
I opened the case and was somewhat dusty but I wouldn't say it was clogged with stuff. I am going to get a can of air and blow it out. Here's the log from AdwCleaner after doing "Clean":

Download and save and then install the free version of

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0.2.1012

SUPERAntiSpyware 5.7.0.1026

Make sure to update their definition files during the install process.

Make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, they may offer.

Make sure to uncheck and decline to use the "Pro" or "Trial" version, if it's offered.

After they're installed and updated, do the following:

Run a "Quick Scan" with SUPERAntiSpyware.

When the scan is finished, select and remove EVERYTHING it found.

Run a "Threat Scan" with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

When the scan is finished, quarantine EVERYTHING it found.

Restart the computer, if prompted to.

I run both these programs somewhat regularly and they do find stuff sometimes. The last time I ran SAS it only found tracking cookies, Malwarebytes found a couple of things (it usually does) and I always quarantine whatever it finds. I will do another scan as soon as I can, I've got some other stuff going on so I don't know when I will be able to do it. I've run AdwCleaner a couple of times since the first time and it finds stuff every time (I'm still using this computer while we're doing this. Should I not?). When I restart the computer, I still get the screen that says:

"Copyright 1999-2003
All rights reserved

Dell System Dimension 4600 Series
Bios A02
www.dell.com

Secondary drive 0 not found
Press F1 to continue F2 to enter setup"

This may not be exactly word for word but it does come up every time I restart but not on initial startup.

I will let you know when I run SAS and Malwarebytes again, hopefully today.

That BIOS is well out of date. It may be worth updating to BIOS A12 in this case as it just may speed things up a bit.
Here is the download link for Dell BIOS A12 (09/27/2004) for the Dell Dimension 4600 desktop that Dave suggested you update from A02 and which addresses and fixes a number of issues.

Read the instructions carefully on how to download it and install it because a failed BIOS update can render a computer unusable.

----------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for the info on the BIOS. I went to Dell Support page and after doing a scan the BIOS was one of the updates that showed up. I did read and follow the instructions and the download and install went smoothly. Seems to have helped. Thanks. As for the Secondary drive 0 not found, I googled it and found another website where a forum thread had the same issue. After a bunch of stuff the poster realized that her CD drive was not working. The door would open and the light would come on but nothing would play. She noticed that the CD drive is not showing up anvywher: My Computer, Device Manager, Disk Manager. I just noticed that my CD Drive is not showing up anywher either (I never use it so I never realized it wan't showing). Could this be the cause of that black sceen message? I do hope to upgrade my memory in the near future as funds permit.
Ted
I was able to get the CD drive recognized and that fixed the Secondary Drive 0 meassage fixed. I guess I'm all set on this for now. If I keep having problems with freeze ups after I upgrade memory I'll start a new thread. I'll mark this solved. Thanks for all your help.
Glad you got it resolved. :)

Good luck with the additional RAM.

----------------------------------------------------------
I need to reopen this thread. I'm still having problems with this system. I've run Adwcleaner, Super Anti-Spywoare, Malwarebytes and Windows Repair (All-in-one). The scans found a couple of things and the Windows Repair did repair some registry and file permissions. After running the Windows repair the system rebooted and after coming back up I got the message "Windows has recovered from a serious error" and asked if I wanted to send an error report. I did send the error report. I have another anomaly that may point ot something: I have a Toshiba Canvio 500GB external hard drive that I connect to this system sometimes. If I boot the system with this hard drive connected, the computer does not recognize it, I have to unplug it and plug it back in. It then goes through the Autoplay sequence even though in Toshiba Canvio>Properties>Autoplay tab I have Mixed Content set to "Take no action". Lately when I umplug it the system flashes a blue screen and goes to the Dell logo as if I've just powered the system on and then loads Windows and goes to the login screen. When I login I get "Windows has recovered from a serious error". This external hard drive works fine on my other system, a Dell 5100C. The 5100C recognizes it on startup and does not go through "Autoplay" if I connect it while the system is running. I gon't know if my OS is fatally flawed and I need to reinstall Windows or if it can be fixed. I really don't want to reinstall Windows if I can avoid it, especially since XP is no longer supported and I have no idea if the cumulative updates are still available. I do have a Windows XP SP3 disc.

Earlier you recommended blowing out the computer's interior. What do you recommend for a can o' air?

I hope you can help me.

I've never owned or used an external USB hard drive, so I can't comment on any issues with yours.

The "stickies" in the WINDOWS XP forum has my guide for doing a clean reinstall of Windows XP.

A portable hair dryer on its highest blower speed and coolest temperature setting is what I use for blowing out the interior of a computer case that's full of dust and debris.

Frank,
Thanks for the info on using a hair dryeer. Great idea! I'll check out your forum on doing a clean install. I think I'm at that point.
Sometimes, a clean reinstall and getting a fresh start is the best option.

The majority of the Windows XP computers that I work on require me doing that.

Thanks Frank,
I guess I 'll just have to bite the bullet and do it. It does run much better if I start the system, login, let it run for awhile and then restart it. I don't know if that means anything.
Let's do one more thing.

Go here, then click the large blue "Download Now @ Author's site" button to download and save TFC.exe (Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer) to your desktop.

After it's downloaded and saved, close all open windows.

Double-click it to load its main window.

Click the "Start" button, then allow the deletion process to run.

Depending on how many temp files are in that computer, it may take a few minutes, so be patient.

After it's finished, restart the computer.
