I have a g4 digital audio desktop mac with, 384mb Samsung ram (2 sticks one is 256mb the other 128mb) and I also got an additional 256mb ram stick made by PNY that I bought seperately, equaling out to 640mb RAM. The samsung dimms where in the machine when I got it. And I noticed that when I copied files to the hard drive or external HD or anything it is super slow. My computer requires pc133 168 pin modules and the guy at best buy told me the PNY would work. I upgraded my processor to a sonnet 1.4 ghz and before & after installing the new PNY Dimm my computer still copies files at 2mb a second which is slower than my 600mhz I mac. I tried removing the new dimm and I think it goes faster then with it in. I am so confused because my buddys macbook pro copied 7gb off my external HD in ten minutes!!! and he has 512mb ram. Can anyone give me some pointers on what to check for as far as hardware? I am a beginner when it comes to RAM so please all help is appreciated. Oh and I also tried removing all the ram and booting up with each one individually, they all work fine in ever one of the three slots..... I wonder if my internal hd (40gb) is the cause of this or if it is the ram not working right together..... So confused. Thanx in advance for your time.

your buddys macbook pro has a faster processor, dual-core, faster bus speed, faster ram, faster hard drive, faster port etc... your G4 is just old.

EDIT: check the speed of the ram modules you have installed on your iMac and Your G4 Tower one could be faster than the other. or maybe you are hallucenating the time difference between the iMac and your G4.

Yeah his macbook pro is the s***! I ran that test and it compared my computer to a g5 mac why is that? I thought upgrading my processor to that sonnet 1.4 would be alot quicker but I guess that was $300 wasted. What does the bus do? How can I make my computer copy files faster? or should I just give it up? lol sorry I know alot of q's but I figured you would be the one to ask.

your bus is stuck at 133Mhz (the G4 chip doesnt allow for anything faster) and the bus is the "highway" of your computer it is used to communicate to all parts of the system... the faster your bus is the faster your computer can operate...(rather the more efficently as to date nearly all bus' speed is clocked at half the processor speed not to mention the ram speed is slower than the processor too) so in other words unless you want to make your system unstable via overclocking your screwed.
