I have an HP Pavilion laptop which came with 250 GB ssd. I have recently replaced that with a Samsung 1 TB 970 EVO Plus ssd and re-installed Windows 11 using media creation tool. I have then installed all the software that I use on a daily basis, mainly Chrome browser, Cubase, Audacity and other music software. I have noticed that some applications take up to 10 seconds to load and videos on BBC News website and others stored on my ssd also take a long time to start playing.

I have checked that I have all Windows updates and that the video driver is the latest version. I have tried temporarily disabling anti-virus software. I have set power control to best performance. None of this has had the slightest effect. Not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions please?

BTW that boot menu combo is just from memory SO if it does not work, check the support page for your laptop and see what keys you need to hit.
Note you can also change the boot order in the bios however that is more work.

Hi again crjdriver. I have tried Ubuntu, just running it from the usb and not installing it, with interesting results. I wasn't able to run my own videos as it didn't have a video player unless I installed one. I wasn't sure where it would be installed so I didn't try that. However, all the problems I had with the BBC website and on YouTube had gone away. I tried it numerous times and it worked every time. I noticed that Ubuntu used Firefox web browser so when I went back to Windows I tried the Firefox browser. That did not solve the problem. I also installed VLC media player. That had slightly different weird problems, such as, the video would start but the sound didn't start for 10 or 12 seconds.

I am assuming, from this test, that I didn't do any damage to the hardware, unless a part used by Windows is not used by Ubuntu, and that the problem lies with some software or firmware that is not used by Ubuntu but somehow got changed when I first loaded Windows on my new ssd. What conclusions do you draw from these results? Hopefully you haven't lost the will to live due to this daft problem.

No, you cannot damage anything. The only part of your system that is not used by linux would be your hard disk. You can access the disk however linux is running in ram. It surprises me that there was no video player included. You can use the software store or repository to install vlc. That still goes into ram so nothing is changed on your drive.
If everything worked fine with linux, that points at a compatibility problem with windows and/or a driver problem.
There is no really easy answer; you are going to have to do some experimenting to [hopefully] find the problem.

Hi, I have done some tests and find that, with videos on my ssd, once the first one has started (with delay) the next one will start ok if started within ten seconds of the previous one being closed. At 11 or 12 seconds the next one has the delay. If I pause a video for 10 seconds it will restart ok but after 12 seconds the video and audio are out of sync and do a bunch of weird stuttering. On YouTube it does the same but with a longer timing, 45 seconds ok, 60 seconds it fails. I will play a bit more but might just give up and live with it until I get a new laptop. Though I hate not knowing what the cause is and that bugs me and keeps me trying other things. Thanks for your continued patience.

Update - after installing ubuntu on the ssd everything worked fine. Reloaded Windows 11 and it worked ok until the next day. Since then I have reloaded Windows 10 and 11 on both the original ssd and the new ssd always with the same result - it doesn't work. After some time and psychiatric help I tried again to find the answer. Reloaded drivers numerous times, did Windows updates, threatened my laptop with a trip to the tip but nothing made a difference. Then I read that someone had the problem on a Dell laptop and it was an audio driver problem.
I have discovered that if I disable the Realtek audio driver all videos start immediately, of course with no sound. I have tried all the versions of the Realtek audio driver that are listed for my laptop on the hp support site. After the third version everything suddenly started working - hooray I thought and created a restore point just in case that would be useful in future. Rebooted the laptop - all still working. Paused a video for about 3 minutes and the problem is back. Tried restoring to the restore point and it has not made any difference. Disabled the Realtek driver and all videos run immediately but with no sound. Does anyone have any idea of a driver that will stay working?
