You appear to have a Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKX desktop hard drive.

I am only getting 72MB/s average. Shouldn't it be faster?
No. It is a mech hard disk and a low end one at that. The blue series of drives are not performance hard disks. You might approach 100meg with something like a raptor drive. Just because it is a sata3 drive does not mean it is going to run at the theoretical sata3 max. No mech hd is going to even come close to sata1 speed; the raptor I referenced above is about as fast as your are going to get with a mech hd [other than a 15000rpm scsi type drive]

In short, if you want a faster drive, go with a ssd.
WDC's maximum transfer rate for that drive is 126 MB/s in a perfect test environment so a 72 MB/s average in a home system doesn't seem wrong.
Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) to the desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

It looks like your computer has a 500 GB(actual capacity 465.66 GB) hard drive that's split into 2 equal partitions.

The C partition is about 57% full and the D partition is about 88% full, and we don't know how fragmented both partitions are.

I'm not a hard drive expert, but I'm guessing it's contributing to the speed.
