If my limited understanding of wi-fi is correct, as long as I have a firewall on my desktop , my laptop is protected. Is this a correct assumption or do I need to add zone alarm to my laptop?

If you are connecting to the internet via your desktop using ICS, then you need to put Zone Alarm Pro on the gateway machine. You can, however, use the free version on your laptop and as sponsor said, you should have Zone Alarm there as well.
