I am having a problem with win98se where most of my program shortcuts like the desktop icons and start menu icons are missing the picture that is associate with the program. so for example Yahoo shortcut on the desktop has a Microsoft IE image instead of the yellow Y icon that it normally has.

some of the icons we can select and hit F5 to refresh and the right picture comes back, sometimes it doesn't work. I can't find any knowledgebase articles.

Not sure about the rest of your desktop icons, but the Yahoo one and any other Internet gained shortcut will disappear after a while and change in to the Internet Explorer e, this is due to the graffic image for these shortcut is stored in your Temporary Internet file, so when these files get written over or deleted, so does the graffic image for the shortcut

Hi,

You might try deleting the shelliconcache file from the C:\WINDOWS folder, and then reboot. Windows will build a new shelliconcache file. This is normally a hidden file, so you will need to change your folder options to "Show all files" to find it.

Wizzkid,

I think you hit upon my problem. I believe I did delete temp. internet problems. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this from happening even if I do delete temp. internet files?

I think the icons WizzKid is referring to are the "favicons" which show when you add a site to your Favorites list that has a favicon. They are temporary and will eventually be replaced by the generic blue "E"...usually after a reboot.

Program icons, on the other hand, like the one for your Yahoo Messenger, should not change.

Mowergun's suggestion of deleting the shelliconcache file and rebooting fixes the icon problem you're having about 99% of the time.

The other option is to download and install TweakUI (plenty of places to download it, just do a Google search) which is free and has the ability to repair icons with one click of of the mouse.
