For some reason, my services.exe file on my computer is hogging my CPU, usually holding around 70% of my CPU usage. I'm not sure at all why this is happening. I recently installed a Kensington Bluetooth adapter, could that be the problem? I started having this problem a few days ago, about 5 days after I installed the adapter...

Not sure about your problem, but for one you have a lot of, in my opinion, unneeded processes running.

In my Process Explorer only event log and Plug and Play are listed under services.exe. All other services are represented by instances of scvhost. If this is the case for you, the new blutooth device is probably the culprit.(unless you're writing a ton of logs) My question would be: Does the bluetooth device adapter need to be plugged in all the time? If other services are listed under services.exe by Process Explorer, I would investigate those. I have never tried a manual setting for Plug and play. Don't know how that would work. Just a thought- could it be that Plug and play is working too hard without the support of Universal Plug and Play? I don't have that enabled. Could it be that your system would adapt to the bluetooth better if Upnp was started?

UPNP is started. Seems that now that I unplugged the Bluetooth adapter the system is running fine. Bluetooth is obviously the culprit.

You are welcome. I downloaded and have tried to use it. However, the scan will not transmit to the programs 'server' for processing. I have tried various combinations of browsers and ISP connection settings to no avail. Did your run go through OK?

It worked fine for me. Helped me lots. Try disabling your firewall when you go to submit this, especially if you have Norton.

Or check to see if you have mobile codes enabled... in your firewall or antivirus...or better, both of them...those often interfere with scans like that.

Thanks for the replies re my question. Scan eventually went thru to the server. It must have been overloaded earlier. I came out "smelling like a rose!"

Largely due to how 3rd party software uses services.exe, particularly wireless communication devices. Look for an icon in the system tray for the device, kill the associated app and use OS to communicate with device e.g. use windows wireless config over that supplied with wifi card.

check suppliers site for driver updates.

I had same problem. Significant CPU usage in btwdins and services when the Kensington dongle installed and insignificant when dongle not installed. I went to the Widcomm (Broadcom) web site and got the latest version (5 vs 4) of the software/drivers and everything is quiet now. Very little CPU usage in the idle state i.e. nothing running. I was able to hotsync with my Treo via Bluetooth(so I know that it is working).

Update;

High CPU usage and ENORMOUS page faults of btwdins reappeared. Uninstalled Bluetooth software and bought MSI StarKey USB Bluetooth adapter. After loading software and installing dongle and leaving computer on overnight, I had the following results:

CPU = 0:00:00 (vs 20% of computer uptime)
Page faults = 3,677 (vs hundreds of millions)

Conclusion: Kensington dongle = POS!

I have no idea what was going on. I thought I had it licked with the very latest drivers from Broadcom, but no go. I ran Procmon and saw waves upon waves of registry requests from btwdins. What a pleasure the MSI dongle is - absolutely no CPU usage or page faults from btwdins. Mind you I have done nothing "Bluetooth" with this dongle yet. Over the weekend I will try to do a hotsync with my Treo, maybe then my problems will begin. I hope not. I just ordered another Bluetooth adapter from Newegg. I now have two Kensington adapters collecting dust.
