Serious trouble with winME !

1375 Views 32 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  ~Candy~
I have lost all functions on my computer. I ran scan disk and found some things which were fixed but still now windows. It all seemed to start when I tried to do a reinstall with WinME. Everything seemed to install without a hitch, but then when I went to use my computer NOTHING worked :(

I tried to scan for spyware but spybot and adaware wouldn't start, so I went into safe mode and scanned from there. I deleted everything that they found, including something called eZula. I rebooted but still nothing works! I tried to do another reinstall now that all of the spyware is gone, but still nothing will work :(

I see the desktop, but when you click on something it just ignores you and won't work.

What should I try next?

:(

Per chance, is the mouse not working????
Hi AcaCandy. The mouse is working fine. When I try to click on something I see the little hour glass and the program tries to open up, but they either freeze up or get lost. I see them when I do a control/alt/delete but they are not running :( Nothing works through the keyboard either. I also tried to do a system restore but it wouldn't work either.
After another reinstall folders will now open up, but not the programs, they still will not run :(

Control panel will also open up, but will not run.
Is this the same setup where you were trying to get Partition Magic to work?
Yes, but a different issue. I think this started because I was trying to download a mp3 with a program called eDonkey2000. I suspected it was spyware after I started to use it so I ran both spybot and adaware and they found something called ezula. Part of ezula needs to be deleted in DOS but when I went into DOS mode with the boot disk it allowed me to delete "ezstub.exe" but it wouldn't allow me to run the "ezstub.exe -UnregServer" command in DOS. That's pretty much as far as it would let me get. You can see the directions that I followed by going HERE.
Do you have enough space on the hard drive to reinstall ME into a different directory? (or is that an option? do you have programs that can't be reinstalled?)

You can wait for other opinions........if it were me, and I'll duck after I suggest it, I'd format c: and start clean ;)

*Candy ducking now* :D

Yes I agree, a clean slate at this point is probably the best bet (although it pains me to say that). Yes I have programs that can't be reinstalled, but at this point nothing is working anyway so what do I have to lose?

(you don't have to duck anymore :D :p )

My biggest concern now is coping everything that I will need later, like my e-mail files (outlook xp). I already copied the documents folder and the favorites folder but I'm afraid that I might forget something :(
Also, if I format, can I go from DOS to Win95 straight to WinME?

Would I use the WinME boot disk to get into DOS to reformat, or do I need another disk to format from
You shouldn't have to jump thru that many hoops. Is the ME an upgrade or full install?
It is an upgrade.
So all you should have to do is boot with a boot disk with cdrom support, pop the ME disk in the cdrom (or if it's bootable, go the route via bios to boot to it first) and type setup.exe from the correct drive, just like a normal install. You should be asked to prove prior ownership, which you will do with your 95 disks or cd.
So after I format and install DOS, I just put in the WinME boot disk and boot up?

Also, what command do I type in to format JUST the C: drive?

I think it's Format C: /U but I'm not sure, it's been a while since I've formatted anything :D
Why do you want to install dos??????? Don't even tell me you have dos install disks that still work

Quite frankly, I'm wondering if the ME disk is bootable like 98? If so, try changing your bios boot order to ME first, and I *think* even on the upgrades it should get you thru the format.

Please disconnect your other drives. I don't want any accidents........you don't have any other partitions on the same c: drive, right?
I don't, but I was always told that Windows needs it to work properly, and it is also needed because without it I wouldn't be able to type in any basic install commands.

Are you saying that I can go straight from a format to the WinME upgrade CD (through the boot disk)
I should think so, I can do it with my 98 upgrade cd..........I just need to have my 95 cd or 1000 floppy disks :D handy to prove my ownership.

It is one 80 gig drive partitioned into 5 other drives. Is this bad

Well that's good news :D

No, you should still be able to format only one partition. Although in the last few weeks, I've seen accidents happen onto other hardrives. Not quite sure how the people managed to format more than one drive (not partition) but........ I like to try to be careful ;)
