Selecting one item selects all

My son in another city has a strange problem. When he selects one item (e.g., one file in a list of files) all are selected. This seems to happen in any part of Windows XP no matter what individual item he is trying to select. I can't find any setting in Control Panel that would cause this.

Shift key is stuck maybe?

or- just for the heck of it-
hold down the shift key when selecting a file and see it anything changes..
