Screen Keeps Shutting Off

543 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  phillpower2
My PC screen keeps going black when I enter certain video games, and I have to restart my PC just to get it working again. I have inserted my graphics card into my friend’s computer, and it ran smoothly. He didn’t even have the correct drivers and it worked fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my graphics card drivers many times with no luck, and my friend suggested that maybe it could be a faulty power supply. Can anyone help?
PC Specs:
NVIDIA GTX 1060
Intel Core I-5 4690 processor
500w Coolmax power supply
Gigabyte B85M-DS3H-A
16gb RAM

Hello Kolmeyer,

I am inclined to agree with your friend as Coolmax PSUs are awful, best way to check his theory is to remove the GTX1060 from the computer altogether, hook your screen up to the appropriate video port on the MB, reassemble and test.

I'm not a hardware expert nor a gamer, but I'm guessing part of the issue is with bottlenecking of the graphics card by the processor.

Thank you, I have tried that in the past and everything ran fine, which is another reason for me to believe the PSU is the issue. I ordered a new one a few days ago, so we will see what happens!

I probably know less than you, because I honestly don't know what you mean by bottlenecking. But this PC was originally my friend's before and everything ran perfectly in it. But when he upgraded, he had to use his old PSU in his new PC. So considering that, I feel like it is definitely the PSU. However, if you could explain further what you mean, I'd be more than willing to try your fix.
I trust that the PSU is of adequate output and quality, for a pre used system such as yours I wouldn't use anything less than a 500W Bronze efficiency rated unit from EVGA, Corsair or Seasonic, 400W would do but even when available they most often cost more than a 500W from the same brand.

You are welcome Kolmeyer btw :)
