Hello all,

I have a friend running Windows 98,, when she turns her system on, it starts scanning hd... gets to about 32% and then says "Long filenames were found that can not be fixed. You must run Windows Scandisk.. " If she presses escape, it will go on and boot to desktop, but nothing but blue screen come up.. no icons etc. Any ideas..? thanks in advance..

Well... we cannot get to safe mode. When she F8's the only 2 options available are "Boot from Hard Drive or CDRom."
Also, when she turns the computer off, it will stay off for a few
seconds and then automatically restarts..... spooky..huh

I have had problems in the past with my scandisc and one thing I always do so that it wont keep re-starting is to turn off your virus protection close out of everything running in the background-Do a cntrl alt delete and end task on all that stuff and make sure you dont have a screensaver on. Then scan your system and when your done turn your virus prot. back on-does that sound right ya'll? I beleve I learned this from you! ;)

Did you run Scandisk with the Autofix option set?? (you didn't mention if scandisk reported any errors??)

If so, then you should review the log (C:\scandisk.log) to see what files scandisk "tried" to fix.

"Potentially" your friend now has files that may be "fixed", but now have a different File Name as a result of the scandisk fix.
