I have had windows 98 for 6 0r 7 years and ii always shut down normally but the past several weeks when i boot up i get the message that my pc was not properly shut down and it does the scan disk procedure. how do i correct?

possibly a disk problem. Try rebooting in safe mode, run a scan and then reboot.

I figured that Windows did have a problem when scanning after goiing into normal mode.

Spybot S&D and Lavasoft Ad-Aware are spyware detectors. They can detect 99% of all current spyware.

HighJackThis is a tool where it looks through the registry for any spyware / trojans that may be added as a result of virus attacks and downloads.

Registry Cleaner helps you remove unwanted registry entries (A bit like MSCONFIG)

CWShredder is a tool that removes CoolWebSearch (CWS) spyware files.

Spyware Blaster helps prevents any current spyware attacks.

Pop Up Stopper is a anti spam tool. It will block all known pop up ads (in fact if you put it into advanced mode, it will stop ALL pop ups, including legitimate ones) and recently they included the Windows Messenger Services advertisements.

Housecall Online Scanner is a link to a free scan for viruses.

The first three programs and CWShredder is the most commonly used programs here at TSG. And the most effective.

I notice you have aol im. I have had 56k aol for 8 or 9 years and this year i started getting kicked off aol often and also it took several tries to access aol so I got qwest msn dsl and this works fine. thought I would like to access aol through msn dsl and this worked for about 2 weeks. now I cant access aol; it goes through the sign on procedure and then says goodbye. I have called aol several times and have received tech help from a different tech each time I called for help. they have had me reinstall aol 9 twice and have tried several techniques to try and have aol connect on my computer but they cant figure it out. one tech said my 300 mhz, 192 ram wasnt enough power and wanted to sell me a better pc.
dont need aol but after having it so long would like to keep it for surfing the net. there must be some link that is missing since I
accessed aol when I first had msn
do you have any ideas that might work?

Try their AOL IM Express. Just bare bones for their IM but works jst the same.

The Online Scanner is, but your best bet is to buy Norton Antivirus. I think it's about $40. There is a free one called AVG but it did not do too well in tests for viruses.

how do I install the AOL IM Express. cant get on aol this am.keeps denying me.
with that aol im express can I surf the web?

was able to successfully sign on to aol and doen load and install AIM. looks pretty good will have to get familiar with it.cant find the price. do you know how mucn this is. I signed on after feb 20 so have aol and not netscape

AIM is free. I think you are mixing up AOL with AOL IM. (AIM)

AOL is the connection software to the net. Best advice is to ditch it and go to another one. AOL (also known as A O HELL) is not stable with Windows, and is the most cause of computer problems. I suggest Earthlink, they are the only ISP (internet provider) that has not given me any hassles at all.

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) is just a messenging tool, like Windows Messenger, ICQ etc. AIM Express is just a lite version of AIM.
