O.K. I am a little embarrassed writing this, I work in tech support, but I am stumped. My Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop is really trying my patience.
I only go online with it for updates and downloading. sometimes at home, sometimes at work. The laptop is new (to me) I have never owned one before. usually I unplug my ethernet cable (Broadband) from my desktop,(at home or work) and plug it into the laptop, and it works fine, sometimes. but for the last three days, It has not been coming up on the laptop, I get the message "limited or no connectivity the host did not assign IP address".
I tried going to cmd and ipconfig release/renew it absolutely refuses to renew the IP address. can someone please help.

I'll assume XP-SP2 here, try this:

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log
