Is it possible to mix IDE (Parallel ATA) with SATA on the same system?

If I am already using the Primary and secondary IDE connectors for four drives: 2 HDDs, a CD-RW and a DVD, can I install additional drives using the SATA connectors? IRQ conflict?

Yes, you can run both types of drives without any issues as long as your motherboard supports SATA drives or if you buy an add-in PCI SATA Controller card.

Yep, at least all the SATA MB's I've seen have that capability. You just need to enable them in the BIOS.

If your MB has a RAID controller, you may also need to load the drivers, even though you're not using the RAID capability. An exact MB model would help all concerned...
