sata drive on xp pro

my primary sata drive on xp crashed, i installed an eide drive and loaded xp pro to boot the computer, when i connected the sata drive it tells me the sata drive needs to be formatted, there is data on the sata drive i would like to recover, is there any way to recover the data.
if i can recover the data, then i will do a full restore from the sata drive recovery partition, my sata drive is a seagate 7200.9, 160gbyte
the computer is a desktop presario sr2020nx
