I have an Asus A7V600 motherboard and Im using a WD 120 GB SATA hd and I also want to hook up my WD 20 GB IDE hd as a slave. How do I do this as I hooked up the IDE drive as a slave on the primary IDE controller with my cdroms on the secondary IDE controller. When I did this the system hung and wouldnt boot at the XP Pro screen where the bar goes across the screen. Thanks.

I'm not sure if you can run both at the same time...If I was you I'd check my motherboard's manual.

At the very least, you could try to slave the 20gig off of the CD-ROM in the secondary IDE. Since it won't be your primary HDD, any drop in performance is probably ignorable.

Or, try setting the drive to master in the primary IDE...Hopefully all the onboard gizmos let the IDE and SATA coincide with eachother.

...Which makes me think there might be an option in the BIOS to set this.

Sorry for the hazy answers...I haven't yet had experience with SATA, so I'm sort of running off my train of thought for things I'd try if I was in your seat.

You can use a Serial ATA drive (SATA) in the same system with Parallel ATA drives as long as both interfaces are supported on the motherboard or with a host adapter.

For more on this you can read this Seagate Tech paper:

I would put the new hard drive as Master on the Primary Channel and the Optical Drives on the Secondary channel. A SATA drive does not use Master or Slave settings and it does not affect Parallel IDE drive Master/Slave Settings.

I got it working now. I forgot I disabled windows from scanning on the primary ide controller because I had no drives connected on it. Thanks for all the help. I got it under control now.
