S L O W Internet connection

We have been having problems for the last week with an extremely slow internet connection.
We have a fast ethernet switch (brand new, replacing a 5 year old hub), connecting four computers to a belkin wireless router (few months old) which connects to a wirespeed modem. While we have a low speed dsl package, it's always worked fine and nothing has changed recently to cause this. Everything was working fine until about a week ago. We have tried resetting the modem & router, and that sometimes speeds things up, but only for a little while. Verizon spent an hour doing some tests, and determined that the problem is internal. So we replaced the hub with the switch, which helped for a little while, now it's slow again. It involves all computers whether connected via cable or wireless.

Any ideas??? Thanks.

If the internet connection begins OK and then slows down with one computer connected directly to the modem, it's probably the modem going bad. Only way I can think to make sure is by borrowing another modem.

If the problem doesn't occur with just the modem in the picture, then it is probably the router going bad. Try resetting it to factory default settings and then reconfigure. If still problem, look for a firmware update.
Take note of all important router settings (e.g., internet connection). Hold the reset button for 10 or 20 seconds (or whatever your router's User Guide says to do). Access the router via broswer and, using your saved information, set it to the way it was before.

The firmware update is for the router. I don't know if any modems (other than modem/router combos) are updatable.
"where do I find the "important router settings" "

You access the router via browser and navigate to the various sections (WAN or Internet, LAN, Wireless, etc.).
