My friend is getting a runtime error

program c: windows/explorer.exe.

This happens after she dials up and it starts making clicking sounds.

Any idea how to resolve this?

Thanks!

so I believe it's a Pentium II.

All that she told me over the phone was:

Runtime error
program c:\windows/explorer.exe

and that it happens right after she dials up. The msn window opens and then a grey box that says that. Someone mentioned maybe a runtime.dll....or some type of dll file.

I wish I knew more to go on, but I can't get ahold of her just yet, but when I do I'll find out if there was a number or anything with the message.

She also says that when this grey box pops up, she can't do anything else. When she clicks off the box it returns her to the desktop. Could it just be the rundll.dll file? I had her try to do a windows update, but that didn't help at all.

After she did a virsus scan and it detected & cleaned 1 virus, she still has probs. She is telling me that the hard drive is making clicking noises. Sounds to me that the heads of the hard drive are banging and that her hard drive is going bad. I have not heard this at all, but from what she tells me it sounds like the hard drive is going bad.

Does this sound right?

Your assumption that the hard drive is likely going bad is correct.

I'd advise the user to:

Backup all your Sensitive Data (Internet Explorer Favorites; Netscape Bookmarks, Address Book and Netscape Mail Folders; Outlook Express Address Books and Folders (compress any Netscape Mail or Outlook Express folders first) letters, pictures, databases, spreadsheets, music, etc.) to removable media for restoring later.
