Hi all.

Have nearly finished a new site for a couple of friends and myself.

www.all-building-centre.com

This site has come about from comments within the industry in Australia that there is not a central arena where information can be obtained.

It is designed to be informal, and, due to the holiday break, we have not yet started to market it yet. This will commence next week.

The classifieds and employment sections are 2 different programs we are evaluating. If anyone knows of better classifieds software (preferrably free) that is user friendly and easily modified, we would like to hear about it.

We welcome all comments.

Thanks for your time.

Deep.

  • Looks well laid out.
  • Colours work well together.
  • I would center the title banner so it lines up with the main column.
  • News section is hidden down the page, perhaps it could have its own page.
  • How about adding a favicon?
  • It might not be obvious to all users that the checkbox under the login area is to remember the password, so it could do with its own text.
  • You may want to buy a domain alias of allbuildingcentre.com in case people forget the dashes. But this will cost extra money.

Only small things really. It looks nice and professional.

Looks good. Functions well.

Your doctype is missing the dtd URI though. This causes browsers to render in quirks mode instead of standards mode (which is some times done on purpose). With quirks mode you usually get more cross browser rendering differences. This time though, it looks like you're O.K.

Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
Most HTML tools fail to do this right.

Anyway, switching to standards mode now would be good, but will force you to retweak your layout because you made the site look right for non-standard rendering.

Don't worry about it for this one, but for the next one, see doctype switching.

Thanks guys for the responses.

I am actually going to redesign the banner so it will remain a liquid layout with 100% width. Haven't had time to get to that yet. Will centre the current one for the time being.

I agree that the news section is hidden. Have been looking at changing it around where there are 2 columns on the front page, news on the left and articles or similar on the right. Am breaking the liquid layout at the moment, not sure why.

Re allbuildingcentre, did not realise that it was available, I was swayed by some articles re the use of dashes to assist in SEO. Have just purchased it.

Re the login area, I agree. There a quite a number of things to be done to tidy it all up. Getting there.

Have to have a look into favicons. Never done 1 before. Am also going to add a bookmark us button later.

The portal is basically straight php-fusion with a new template and a couple of minor changes so far. Doctype has been assigned already and I haven't touched it.

I will check with php-fusion community and see what they say about the changes.

Again, thanks for the responses. It is much appreciated. Now for the footslog of marketing:up: .
