{RESOLVED}OE 5.5 and Norton not happy together?

hello all,

Right now my machine has IE 5.5, OE 5.5, and Norton's Antivirus 2000 (version 6.10.23) I was looking around the Norton's program and I noticed that I can set it up to protect my e-mail account. So I tried to set it up to do that. I then went and opened my OE and my e-mails came through then this error showed up:

Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: '', Server: '', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18
This is the second time that this error has affected my puter, so I know how to fix this. What I am wondering is was this caused by Norton's Antivirus since the same thing happened when I tried this earlier?

Are you in fact supposed to run Secure Password Authentication?

Maybe you aren't.

Go to your properties for that mail account.
Then click the Servers Tab
UNCLICK the selection:
Logon using secure password authentication.

That may just fix the problem :)

I don't really think this has to do with NAV.

Good luck,

This is a link to a totaly free antivirus program that will work with your computer, they provide automatic free updates, I use it, and I recomend it,...Rhett
thanks people!

I kinda figured that was what happened. If things happen the same way twice after doing something, that something must be the cause. huh?

In the directions that they gave me to fix the problem, I was supposed to have the checkmark in the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)". They, MSN, enacted this rule about 4 months ago.

Right on the nose, baby!

Thanks for the free antivirus link. My Norton's AntiVirus is still protecting me from those nasty things that nerds do. I scan weekly and update bi-weekly. It caught the Bymer virus that I got through OE e-mail.

Glad you got it fixed !
I was running McAfee, after the last update, this thing was running slow and the mouse cursor was flashing like crazy, also took forever to boot up and shut down, installed AVG and deleted McAfee and Presto, everything back up to speed.

For others reading this post , AVG also scans O/E mail, incoming and outgoing, if you need protection, check it out (no I don't work for them ) ...Rhett
AVG is a good product as are many others. Norton also scans e-mail in and out but the little pop deal is kind of unique when you can use it because it creates like a separate system from your main system to scan e-mail before it get into your main system.
That is the way it was explained to me anyway. Not sure of the mechanics and maybe someone can explain the concept better.

Anglin fool.........Glad it got staightened out.
That might explain the loop back address of Norton's tried to set up thier own separate system.

Well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. (Sorry Ms. Slater for the 'ain't')
The heck with Ms. Slater :p ain't is in Websters! ;) :D
