Hello, I have Norton Internet Security 2004 and I am trying to install it...but since I got rid of Norton 2003 it will not install, during set up it says MGI needs to be present during setup and has a ok button, so I hit ok and then set up stops and the error that comes up saying something like Set Up is incomplete ...well I scanned with moosoft and PCcillan and there is no virus so what am I doing wrong?

There is nothing in the Scanlog that should inhibit the reinstallation. It is likely a problem with an incomplete removal of the old version.

And if you can copy exact error messages (no idea what "mgi" is, there are no hits for it on the Symantec site) you may be able to research them through the "knowledge base" search here:

http://search.symantec.com/custom/us/query.html

You might using this removal tool to uninstall it, though you may need to reinstall it first, I don't really know.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...56b11005f2cca&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Make sure no elements of the 2004 version are installed before you use it.

ok I have a little problem, I was in the symantec site because when I was installing I got the MSI error sorry I made that mistake, anyway in the problem is this,,
To reinstall the Microsoft Windows Installer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: These steps do not apply to Windows XP. If you have Windows XP, skip this section and read the section "To install the Microsoft Windows Installer on Windows XP".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start > Run.
Type the following:

msiexec /unregister

Click OK.
Click Start > Run.
Type the following:

CMD

Click OK.
Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each one:

cd /d %systemroot%\System32
ren Msiexec.exe msiexec.old
ren Msihnd.dll msihnd.old
ren Msisip.dll Msisip.old
ren Msi.dll msi.old
exit

BUT I HAVE XP!!!! how do I fix that?

IF you entered these commands:

cd /d %systemroot%\System32
ren Msiexec.exe msiexec.old
ren Msihnd.dll msihnd.old
ren Msisip.dll Msisip.old
ren Msi.dll msi.old
exit

UNdo it by entering these

cd /d %systemroot%\system32
ren msiexec.old msiexec.exe
ren msihnd.old msihnd.dll
ren msisip.old msisip.dll
ren msi old msi.dll
exit

THEN go to Administrative Tools > Services and look for Windows Installer; double click it to access its Properties and make sure it is set to "manual"

I'm afraid it's not a very enlightening error code, indicating only that the install/uninstall failed. Google searching turns up nothing of value.

You might try the uninstall after a "clean boot": Start > Run msconfig and clear the check for the startup group and reboot. Try the uninstall. Recheck the startup group for a normal start afterwards.

It might be a good idea to disable all non microsoft services as well, following the directions above.

Also, you can try this either before or afterwards, close all open programs and windows, go to start and run:

sfc /scannow

You should see a progress bar, but you will not be prompted unless the system file checker fails to find what it needs.

Also did you ever follow the instructions in that previous article to UN register and then RE register the installer service?

ok I did the whole pc doctor and had alot of problems however I got 7 days on it so I fixed everything and it still will not download, I got another type of error and it is NMAIN.EXE
This application has failed to start because SYMSTORE.dll was not found (that is when I hit the OK button for the MSI launch.
