(Resolved) Email problem

780 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Davey7549
I am having trouble sending and receiving email from my server address. I just had my hard drive formatted and Windows 98 reloaded, and am in the process of trying to reload the other software. I also installed Norton System Works and Firewall. I suspect one or both of these programs are causing my problem. The server keeps timing out before the email will go through. How can I get them to "loosen up" enough to help me get my email going again?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Robert

I would first try to isolate if either or both of the applications are the problem. Disable Email protection within Norton Antivirus and disable the firewall. Then try sending an E-Mail to yourself. See if the send and receive functions are working properly.
If so then activate your firewall and try sending receiving E-Mail again.
If still Ok then Deactivate the firewall and Activate Norton's Incoming scan and try send receive again. Then activate Norton's outgoing scan and try send receive.
Finally turn back on Firewall and send receive again.

Let us know what you pinpointed and from there we should be able to dig further.

PS: Go Slowly on the Sending and Receiving of E-Mails to yourself leaving a couple of minutes time in between. Some ISP's can detect unusual rapidly repeating patterns and stop the communication. This procedure was incorporated to help prevent the "Denial of Service" (DOS) attacks that were happening awhile back.
Thanks Dave: I implemented your suggested solution, and wasn't getting anywhwere. As it turned out the program was "remembering" my former email address and prompting me to use it in the setup, and this old address differed from my latest with only a period. I hadn't noticed that it was doing this to me until I happened to see it out of the corner of my eye and corrected it. And the hard drive was supposed to have been formatted! So I don't know why it was doing this to me, as that change to my address was made six months ago, and it had been operating with my new address for all that time. Lesson is to not accept unquestioningly any default the machine throws at you! Declining eyesight and advancing years are catching up to me!

Take care and all best,
Robert
