{RESOLVED} Cd rom and cdwriter drives listed as removable drives?

1004 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  jimpleasant
I have a HP computer with a cdrom and a cdwriter...my problem is My computer folder lists these as removable drives. I have sought other help, done numerous things...such as removing the cdroms from device manager and letting Windows 98 re-install them. I can't read these in Windows Explorer either.
I have Adaptech Cd Creator 4.0 and in this program under cd info....the contents of both drives can be seen, also I can test these 2 drives, and they work perfectly under the tests. Any ideas why My Computer and Explorer see these drives as removable? I have exhausted my ideas on this one?????

You don't have DirectCD installed, do you? If so, uninstall it, reboot, and see if that does the trick.

Is direct cd a program or is it part of a program? Not sure what you mean Larry? I use Adaptech cd creator 4.0, Cool Edit 2000, Sound Forge 4.5, and a couple of others????
I have been to HP support and they don't have any answers that help. They now want me to dump all my programs and files and start from scratch....easy way out I guess?
Was working great until something changed. The drives test okay in the Adaptech program...which is the only place they can be seen. In my computer they are listed as removable. I removed the drivers, and let Windows re-install them...no help. I then removed the drivers, plus the controllers also for floppy, cd. I tried to remove the hard drive controller also, but got a message I could not do it because of a parent device relating to it. It is a primary ide controller (dual fifo) and secondary ide controller (dual fifo)<----could not remove these for some reason.
Is this possible to solve without re-formatting and losing everything?
Can't figure out why Adaptech sees the cd drives and my computer does not???? Strange.

It is normal to not be able to remove the child IDE devices, so don't worry about that.

DirectCD, if you have it, will be listed in Add/Remove programs. It is made by Adaptec, and many times is installed when you install Easy CD.

Formatted the drive.....lost lots of great stuff, but now the drive work properly. Thanks Larry anyways. I dealt with this for over a week....and made the decision, all is well now.
