Hello.
When I turn my computer on I get the following message:

Cannot find device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application.
The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.

If you still want to use this application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSHINIT.VXD
Press any key to continue_

I need any help I can get. If nothing can be done I do have a recovery disk. Thanks

Hi,

Welcome to the board!

It's a McAfee Safe and Sound file.

If you've recently uninstalled McAfee, do the following:

Go to Start/run, type Regedit.

Drill down to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD

In the right pane, click Vshinit , and then press the DELETE key.

Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

Presto!

Good luck,
