Hi everyone

My friend has an acer aspire 5332. Both USB ports are broken on the inside. I've had a quick look around and just wondering how hard it is to replace the ports with a soldering iron? I've looked for replacements but having trouble and not sure what to search for on eBay.

Is the only other way to replace the motherboard?

How much would it cost roughly to replace them if we took it to a shop (average)?

Thanks in advance

I assume this is a laptop; you didn't tell us that.

Resoldering the USB ports or any other component of a laptop's main board requires complete disassembly of the laptop. Disassembly and reassembly alone is an expensive job even not considering any repair like soldering. Add the cost of the tedious job of precision soldering of those tiny, delicate components by an experienced technician and you can easily rival the cost of a replacement laptop.

As to exact cost, you'll just have to take it to a shop you trust and get a quote as, most likely, no two shops are not going to quote the same price.

I'm happy with taking laptops apart but have never soldered. I was just thinking of telling my friend that either i could replace the motherboard, or she could take it into a shop and get the ports replaced. I'm just trying to see which would likely be cheaper for her. I've found a replacement motherboard for £80. Any suggestions on which option i should suggest would be most helpful!

Thanks
