Hi,
I have a computer purchased back in '98 running a Pentium II 300 mghrtz chip. I recently purchased a Pentium II 450 and installed it, however the computer still is only running at 300. I know that jumpers and/or bus speeds need to be changed, but I don't know how. I looked all through the BIOS and can't find anything that refers to bus speed. I have changed the jumpers around but the system runs at 300 no matter what the jumpers are set at. The motherboard is a M6TLC, and I have the manual, but cannot seem to find out how to change the bus speed. There are jumper setting diagrams, but none that refer to a 450 mghrtz processor, and changing them does nothing anyway.
I wanted to up the speed on this old machine, put in a new bigger hard drive, put WINxp (it now runs 98se) on it and use it for backups. I'm beginning to think that this processor upgrade can't be done, but any advice would surely be appreciated.

It's possible that the MB doesn't support the proper settings for the newer processor. My look at the manual suggests it only supports up to 333mhz. Did you upgrade to the latest BIOS available?

John beat me again I had to install adobe to read the manual. It says up to 333 speed cpu. This would lead me to think the board is limited to 66mzh fsb.

Thanks for your replies. It doesn't look good as far as getting up to 450. I'm in contact with the gentleman I purchased it from and he thinks that the best that I can hope for is 333 mhtz. How do I upgrade the BIOS? I realize that this sounds like a dumb question but I never have had reason to do it before. If anyone knows how I might upgrade the board or something to get more speed I would appreciate any and all advice.

Ok after a little looking, a bios update is not going to help in this instance. You have a 440LX chipset. It cannot run at the 100mzh fsb that is required by the PII 450. I think the best you can do is somewhere around a 4-500 celeron [which uses the lower 66mzh fsb]

Truthfully, before I put more money into that system, I'd be looking at simply replacing the MB/processor/RAM. I'm in the process of giving away three systems that have better specifications than you could possibly do with that MB. I think if you look around, you could have much better used parts for peanuts.
