Renaming User folder

589 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  lochlomonder
Six months ago, a smart-ass technician installed a new OS on my HP Compaq Presario CQ57 running Windows 7, and named my Users folder 'Charlie'. (My name is not Charlie.) I should have made him change it right away, but didn't notice it until later, and now I live in a different city. I am trying to get rid of the name - my own name would be nice, for instance. But I can't rename it. When I go to C:/Users/ and highlight Charlie, there is a 'Rename' link on the 'Organize' pulldown, but it is grayed out. How can I get rid of this incorrect and misleading name?

Do you have an alternate account to use for making changes, e.g. the built-in Administrator account? I have a solution for you, but it requires some Registry edits and you'll have to do them with an account other than "Charlie".
Yes, lochlomonder, I have an Administrator account, or at least I guess I do. I've never used it, but my User Accounts page on my control panel says I have one, and it is named garyduanecox (that's me). When I go to C:/users/ there are half a dozen user accounts listed. One of them is Administrator, and it has only an empty folder named Links in it. There is one named garyduanecox, and it has all my files through last September (which is when the OS was changed and the name Charlie introduced). And there is one named Charlie, with all my current stuff.

I don't know how to do a Registry edit. Can you walk me through it? Does it mean editing in Java or Basic? I've done that kind of thing a couple of times, but only with someone to walk me through it.
Okay, this a tad confusing to me. First you stated this...

If the garyduanecox account is still there, have you not tried logging into it? When the OS was "changed", what was there previously? I may be wrong, but I'm guessing a clean installation was carried out, and this prompts the installer for an initial user account to be used. Furthermore, I'm guessing the installer is called Charlie, who went ahead and set up the machine, but forgot to delete the account afterwards and you've been using it since.

It should be fairly easy to consolidate the two accounts, but that's contingent upon what you've been doing under the Charlie username. The first thing to do is try logging into the PC with the garyduanecox, using the last password you remember. If that doesn't work, log into the Charlie account, hold down the Windows and R buttons together and let go (this will bring up the Run dialogue box). Within this box, type in CMD and then wait for the Command Prompt icon to appear as an option. Right-click on this and choose Run as Administrator.

This brings up the Command Line Interface (CLI). Within this box, type in net use garyduanecox password, but replace the word password with anything you want to set as your login password. Hit the Enter key and then close the CLI box. Log out of the Charlie account and then try logging into the garyduanecox account with your newly-changed password. Presupposing this works, I'll walk you through the rest in the next post.
