NOTE: I may be incorrect but try this(I think I am incorrect, but its worth a shot).

just change the ".something" to .mp3

EXAMPLE: metallica.avi, delete ".avi", type ".mp3"

You might have windows set to hide the extensions of known file types. i.e. "File.doc" might just appear as "File" with a Word icon if Word is installed and you have windows set that way.

To rename it: In Win98, in Explorer, go to 'view'->'folder options' and click on the 'view' tab. Uncheck the 'hide file extensions for known file types' box. In 95, go to 'view'->'options' and do the same thing.

For the most part, though, you shouldn't need to do it. Simply changing the extension won't make the file readable for the application you're trying to use.
