I had to reformat and reinstall windows due to a virus . now since I have done that I am back to getting those bloody windows popups . can someone tell me how to stop them again ???

You should install Service pack 2, they will be gone.

If you dont want to do this, then at leas turn on internet connection sharing and firewall, then turn off messenger service in services.msc.

Make sure you apply all the service packs available except SP2 if you dont want that one.

Are you referring to the Windows balloon tips that appear in the lower right-hand corner of the screen? If so, this link will tell you how to turn them off.
