One of the less enlightened on my consulting team sent me the [email protected] virus. It has creasted a file that I would like to remove. It will not allow me to remove the system exe file from the control panel. What is the syntax to remove it from dos. I have already used Norton and since it is such a new virus, they do not have a way to remove it yet. Do you have other suggestions on what I should do?

Thanks for your help! I greatly

If the file is in c:\windows\system

and you want to delete in DOS, restart and press and hold the ctrl key while rebooting to access the Boot Menu. Choose "command prompt" from the menu. At the c:\> prompt enter:

cd windows\system
del filename

exit, win or ctrl-alt-del will return you to windows.

Note, if the file name is over 8 letters, you must use the DOS short name. To see that right click on the file and select properties (when in Windows).

Can't hurt to have a look, but spise evidently has the new version of this worm badtrans.b. (I made the same mistake earlier and had to go back and edit a previous post).

SavvyLady and others have posted some good info on this, although removal procedures still seem to be a bit up in the air. DOS commands may be needed to get rid of the files in the system directory. I would be surpised if Symantec and others do not soon post fix tools to download for this one.
