Ive been working with computers for a good couple years now, but nothing over Pentium II and I've had my share of breaks, i still dont know as much as most people on this forum. About a month ago i decided i was gonna make a computer worth using, so i gradually accumulated parts, ASUS motherboard(cool n quit, SLI), Athlon X2 4200+ 2.2ghz, 1GB 533mhz DDR2 RAM, 256MB Nvidia GeForce 7600GT(SLI Ready), Ultra X2-Connect 550W power supply w/ UV..etc...etc.

Basically my question is what can i do to this stuff to work it to its potential?

what is the OS you are planning to use? and what is the model of the Asus motherboard? also I hope you opted for a Quality manufacturer with the ram

ASUS M2N4-SLI is the motherboard, and the RAM is Kingston, i pulled it from a Mac G5 i was using for World of Warcraft, which i hope to be playing on this new comp, I will try to run, primarily Windows XP, then maybe vista ( also i will run Fedora Core 6 and maybe Ubuntu off of it) This will be primarily a gaming computer, hopefully, i believe the cool n' quiet motherboard util will allow me to overclock, i have no idea how to tweak anything or how much and what to buy. For example are Ramsinks a good investment? and what do i need on the comp to do this kinda stuff?

First visit your Asus motherboard website, pull up the motherboard and take a look at the QVL (it will be on the left of the page) Buy ram that's on that. There is no need to buy extra cooler for the computer unless you have a case that has poor cooling. I have a Thermaltake case with a Core 2 duo and its temps never reach past 45C the video card about the same. Sure I could spend more money and get the temps probably 35-40C max range or water cool and get 25-35 max but whats the point? If I was reaching 55-60 C range then I would look into cooling. Overclocking is pointless, gain absolutely no performance gain except on benchmarks. You would not see 1 bit of improvement really during game play. shorten the life of the components.
Matching the ram with the speed of the CPU is always a good ideal for getting best performance

This is a tweak for gaming and general XP use, I got from Black Vipers before his website went down. (besides the old TechTV site Vipers was the best, miss them both.)

Please check attached document for XP gaming tweaks
(notepad doc)

Good LUCK!

PS. always check the website of the game you are playing. They usally always have a tweak you can use to gain performance.

If it were me, I would just make sure you have good air flow through the case, install all of your updated drivers and play.and check temps periodically.
