Okay I just got a nasty PC from a person who wants this fixed -

Ad-aware found over 1,900 items in there Spybot ran secondly found another 300 (not to mention the find after the reboot). I also ran Hijack this and removed anything that looked even remotely negligible.

At this point I have gotten it serviceable but I have found 2 problems -

System Restore no longer works and secondly everytime I try and go to task manager or to the registry it opens for a split second and closes.

Also 1 particular site keeps trying to reinfect this PC each time I connect it to the internet it mentions about loading a plugin and then gives a nice XXX icon on the desktop.

Anyone have any thoughts if I have used Hijack-this why it would still be trying to download something? Its lmoast as htought something is till not right with this PC.

Not much to see in the HJT log but here ya go. There are a few things that concern me but I can't get to task manager to try getting rid of them like the rundll32.exe and the iexplore.exe (even though no instances of internet explorer are open). Okay that fixed the regedit and taskmgr problem but I still have a sex site loading on startup that makes an icon that reads SEX and something called Web Site Viewer trying to add things to dialup and other things. I think this is all from one program but I can't figure out what it is and I don't see anything in my registry under run or runonce that would be starting this.

Run Hijack This again and fix this entry:

Boot into Safe Mode again

Find and delete this file: questmod.dll

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Now click the "Delete Cookies" button and click OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Restart your computer, post a new log

From your hijack this, it looks like you already had Norton Anti-Virus. Did that solve the initial problem with regedit and the task manager.


questmod.dll looks suspicious and shows up on a few sites as being ad-ware.

Okay heres new log -

C:\Program Files\WebSiteViewer\125189.dlr is one of the culprits this thing I have deleted the entire folder and it recreates after a reboot and when connected to the internet.

I was using NAV this whole time and I have ran multiple scans but htis keeps reinstalling.

Yup followed that and no dice it still comes back upon reboot and new internet connection. I looked at this one on a few sites and all had a little different way of cleaning it but the 3 ways I tried have not worked it keeps coming back.

If "webSiteViewer" is still showing...........
You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also uncheck the box marked "Hide protected operating system files".

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close ALL open browsers.
Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc......Tools->Open process manager.
Select the following and click Kill process:

C:\Program Files\WebSiteViewer\125190.dlr

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

WebSiteViewer

Delete the following:

C:\Program Files\WebSiteViewer <==Entire folder

While your in Safe Mode, open notepad and paste in the following Bolded lines:

DoubleClick on the icon, and say Yes when prompted.

Re-boot and cross your fingers.

Thanks for all your help steve and guys -

I know that Hijack this should be ran from its own folder but I really don't care about fixing anything it removed because I am just batteling this junk. I think I have officially given up I followed all instructions to the T and still I get this download upon bootup.

There are enough other problems that I have decided to rebuild the problem list includes -

when I tried to create the batch file indows had no clue where notepad.exe was and there is no plain txt association and the notepad icon prompted me to browse.

Also once I created the batch file I was told that X.bat was not a valid win32 application.

With those on top of the 1,800 ad-aware items found and the 300 spybot items and this reloading thing I htink I am gonna just rebuild and give it back to them.

Honestly I think their son spends a little too much time visiting some of those "seedy" sites so its gonna be something I am prolly ognna get a call on in 2 more months (thats how long it has been since that last PC infection on this computer).

Over 2000 ad-aware items is a fair amount to be seriously concerned about. Make a lot of money with kids that do this same thing. My record is some kid that have over 14,000 items. After clicking on the Start Button it took around 3 minutes for anything to show. The first few times I just would hit the reset button because I figured the system was locked up.

Most times the software out there will take care of it. Sometimes you need to do a repair install. Sometimes you need to do a clean install.
