I've installed Redhat 9 on a prtition of my laptop (where the other partition contains Windows XP PRO) for learning purposes and I was doing good, till I changed the desktop to GNOME instead of the defualt one... when I tried to enter as usual (root), with same password, it gives me an error message: Authentication Failed !! I tried everything... non worked! :(

when you go to boot up grub/lilo (grub should be b to edit) , edit the kernel line by appending single to the end of it, this will allow you to change the root passwd.

also, its a very bad idea to run as root by default, do yourself a favor and when you get back in, make a normal user account for security purposes.
