Red X in all boxes
When I open a program or an internet site I get a red X in the place of the words or pictures that should be there.

That's odd.
Click Options on the View menu in Internet Explorer, click the Advanced tab, and make sure the Enable Java JIT Compiler check box is checked.
If it is, try installing Microsoft Virtual Machine again.
