Recycle bin filled with .bak files

When I checked my recycle bin I found approximately 60 files with the extension ".bak". I realize they are backup files, but I have no idea how they got there.I never deleted them. Can someone explain please? Thanks!

When you look in the Recycle bin, what is the Original Location for these files? And the Date Deleted?

This should give you some clue as to where they came from and what may have caused the deletion.
No they shouldn't be "automatically" deleting.

Restore one from the bin and open it with Notepad/Wordpad and see if there are any identifying info.

BTW the extension is BAK, what is one of the file names?
Where do you see it in Outlook??
As an email??
