recovery of deleted e-mail folders

HELP - Some how my husbands work e-mail folders have been deleted from outlook express. We had a virus on the computer and had to turn off system restore so I have no restore point other than today. The files were there yesterday definitely and probably this morning - is there any way they will still be on the hard drive somehow. If so, how do I retrieve them.
Assistance would be gratefully received.

When posting, always state your OS and version numbers along with names of programs involved in your problem. The correct answers can depend on this vital information.

Sorry, it was late - have no brain cell... My operating system is Windows X professional, office xp, and using outlook express 6. I have seemed to locate a shadow file, but this is a dbx file and i dont know how to open this yet.
Yes, DBX files are the database files for OE. They contain the emails.

You should have DBX files named identical to folders that appear within OE. For example, if you had a folder called Husband, there should be a DBX file called Husband.dbx. If they are there, try right clicking in OE and recreating new folders with the identical names as the folders that got lost.

One of two things will happen, either OE will recognize them and your emails will show up. Or, OE will not recognize them. In which case, the only way I know to recover emails is from the DBX files with a donation software called DBXtract. Read about it here and download:
