This is probably an easy fix, I receintly got a new computer with Windows XP. My old computer was running Windows 95 and instead of having the hard drive fall into the wrong hands I removed it and put it in the new one. Windows XP did a fine job recognizing it. I want to keep the information on it and use it as a slave. I can read, view and transfer files back and forth with no problem. The problem is: when I turn on the computer it will not recognize drive E:, it will only recognize drive E: when I "reboot". Every time I shutdown the computer this happens. I have tried to use "disk management" but had no luck. What can I do?

Some thoughts come to mind.

Is your bios set to AUTO for all channels? How do you have the drive jumpered? Since this is a new box, it should be using CS [cable select] with the blue, black, and grey cable.

Sometimes problems with a cold boot that go away with a reboot are caused by poor quality / too small of a power supply. Since your new drive does require power, make sure the ps is up to powering the system.

Try using a different molex connector; an unused one if possible.

The bios is set to AUTO, I'm not sure about what colors the CS is(I'll have to check back on that), if it helps, the new computer is a DELL. And they didn't leave much room for adding things. ie dirves and such. When I bought the original computer it was "top-o- the line", Western Digital 4gig hd. So its about 8 maybe 9 years old.
