I recently got a firmware upgrade for my internet router which means I can add a dynamic DNS which I did and it works, suprisingly.

Are there any ports I need to setup for Real VNC and remote desktop connection if I want to connect from someone else's house?

You need to forward port 5900 for TCP and port 5800 to use the JAVA client.

FWIW, I suggest you closely monitor the dynamic DNS capability, because I tried to use it, and there's a catch. It doesn't renew periodically to keep your account active, so I want back to the computer service. This is with www.dyndns.org if that's what you're using.

If you'd like file transfer capability, I'd recommend UltraVNC over RealVNC. It uses the same ports that John mentioned by default, but it's not a bad idea to use a non-standard port.

I have realVNC and have only used it over a LAN so far however I know it's possible to do it over the internet.

Remote desktop connection I use for LAN as well because if I change location, people can't see what I'm doing.

And John, I use no-ip.com. I have a pretty stable DSL connection so I guess it will renew the IP every time it restarts which is really the only time that it disconnects.

I use VNC (UltraVNC) from the office to home over the internet. However firewall rules block VNC 5900; so I tunnel VNC through a SSH (port 22) connection (which is allowed) and it works well enough if a little slow.
