When I tried to play a video stream earlier, I got an error message about a missing file in my Temp Internet files. An attempt at playing an audio stream got the same response. I tried to uninstall Real Player, but for some reason that didn't work, as I got an error message about missing an uninstaller component. When I tried to reinstall it, that wouldn't work either, as when it had to uninstall Real Player, the aforemention uninstaller component error occured. I tried redownloading the latest version of Real Player, but the same error occured, and when it did install, my attempts to play streams cause AOL to crash, and it won't play regular RP files at all.

What has happened, and what can I do to fix this ?

Real is owned by AOL and the player is integrated into the AOL "browser". Trying to remove Real probably damaged AOL.

You could try reinstalling AOL to see if it repairs both.

If RealPlayer won't uninstall in Add/Remove Programs, do this:

1. Go into C:\PROGRAM\FILES, then right-click on and delete any REAL, REALNETWORK, or REALPLAYER folder.

2. Go into the registry(Start - Run - REGEDIT - OK), then click the + in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE

HKEY_CURRENT_USER - SOFTWARE

In the SOFTWARE sub-menu, look for a REAL, REALNETWORK, or REALPLAYER folder. Right-click the folder, then delete it. Ignore the warning that appears.

3. Go into Find - Files And Folders, type in REAL, then allow the list of files to appear. Some of them will be obvious that they are associated with RealPlayer and some will not. If you find a file that you're unsure of, right-click it, then click Properties. The information in the General and Version tabs should tell you if the file is associated with RealPlayer. For every file that you have no doubt about, right-click it and delete it.

4. Reboot your computer.

These steps will manually removed 99.9% of RealPlayer from your computer - and hopefully solve your problem.

As far as "AOL HELL" is concerned, I would consider getting rid of it and getting another ISP. If you decide to follow my advice, the steps for getting rid of it are posted in my website.

I did all that, and was able to redownload Real Player fine. But when I go to play any Real files, the program shuts down, and Windows gives me an error message.

RealPlayer and RealOnePlayer have been problematic since Moby Dick was a minnow. I provided the sets for cleaning it out of your computer. I didn't know that you would reinstall it. My personal advice would be to get rid of RealPlayer and AOL.
