RAM upgrade troubleshooting

Hi,

I have an older laptop HP Pavilion dv6-2160em. I currently have 2 sticks of 2GB ram DDR3 1067Mhz. I wanted to do upgrade to 8GB which my laptop supports. Went on Crucial website, did the system scan and they suggested Crucial 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB) DDR3L-1600 SODIMM but since it was out of stock I found Kinston SODIMM DDR3L 1600 4GB and bought a pair of these.

But my windows won't start, after installation I got blue screen 'Your PC run into problemm and needs to restart', after that black screen 'Preparing Automatic Repair' and it just keeps going like that in loop.

When I click ESC and enter into Startup, in BIOS it shows 8GB memory and after running a memory test it shows 'memory test pass' so that means that there is nothing wrong with the memory.

I tried putting just 1 stick, replacing their position but always the same.

Could someone please tell me can I use this memory at all or is there any additional tweak that I shoud take in resolving this matter.

No, it does NOT mean there is nothing wrong with the memory. Built in memory tests are next to useless. The only way to test memory is to boot the system with a memtest usb and run it for a minimum of 1hr.

Next have you reinstalled your old memory to see if that works? If not, do so.

When you R&R memory in a laptop, you need to follow this procedure;
1 System OFF and unplugged from A/C pw
2 Remove the battery and then press the ON button 2~3 times
3 Open memory bay and remove or install your memory. Be sure it is fully seated
4 Close memory bay and replace the battery. Connect to A/C pw and pw ON

Hey, thanks for a quick response. Yes when I put back my old memory everything is OK. I'm just curious to know since my laptop is old could these memories that I bought work at all, theoretically? Also I forgot to mention that my old ram have 16 chip(8 on each side) and these new ones have 8(4 on each side), could that be an issue?

You should add and save this support site for your 10-year old laptop in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can quickly refer to it when needed.

Your laptop supports 204-pin DDR3-1066(PC3-8500) 1.5 volt, CL=7, unbuffered, non-ECC SODIMM modules.
You purchased and installed DDR3L-1600(PC3-12800) modules in it, so it's my guess they're not compatible.

After looking at your log, I want to mention 2 other issues with your laptop.

It's running Version 1511 OS Build 10586 of Windows 10 Home 64-bit.
It's more than 4 years out of date and is no longer supported and receiving security updates from Microsoft.

It's running the Norton 360 antivirus app instead of running the Windows 10 built-in antivirus app.
Windows 10 can have various issues when using a third-party antivirus app.

Unless the ram has been tested and found to work ie what appears on the crucial site, it is hit and miss. Laptops are even more "Proprietary" than a desktop; you either buy recommended ram or buy from the laptop mfg [if you want it to work]

Yeah, thanks...on youtube upgrading ram look so easy and elegant, in real life not so :)
