Hey all,

I've installed ram before into other computers, and all that was needed was to plug it in, and play. So simple, but thats rarely the case for me...

I have an ASUS k8n Motherboard, and I recently purchased a PC3200 low density DDR 1 gigabyte stick of ram. I plugged it in, computer booted fine and everything, but it still said I had 1 gig of ram, rather then 2 gigs. I searched online for a while, and came with 3 different solutions. 1 said that you need matching pairs of ram, but I know thats not necessary in every case, because my dads computer has a bunch of random sticks in there. Another said it will be recognized right away, obviously thats not the case either. The third spoke of the dreaded BIOS settings  It said I must get my motherboard manual which I did, and reset the Jumpers, but this involves messing around with the CMOS settings, and setting them back to default.

I realize this may be the only way, but if not then help would be much appreciated. Any suggestions? If anyone has done this and reset the CMOS settings, then maybe a quick walkthrough would help, if you have the time.

Thank you in advance ! !

When the system posts, do you see two gig of ram being counted or one?

Have you tried other slots on the board?

Yes, it is best to have memory of the same brand, speed, cas latency, etc. While you might get away with mis-matched ram on some systems, when you do this you are asking for problems.

Ahh... I shoulda known, I always end up buying the wrong stuff. Alright well, i will try putting the 1 gig in a different slot, the system only says I have 1 gig in there, which are my 2x 512's and it never mentions having 2 gigs. I've checked in a few different places. Well thank you for the quick reply, any more help (if there is any) would be much appreciated

EDIT* obviously I took "post" data as the wrong thing haha, I feel like such a little nooblet... alright ill do that now though, thanks bud

It would help if you posted links to your parts ie motherboard, ram you are trying to install, etc. This would help when trying to decide if what you installed will work or not.

If you really want 2gig of ram, I would pull one of the chips you have now and check the brand, speed, etc and get one of those. Modern systems can be pretty picky about ram so it is best to match what you have now. Another way is to go to crucial's site and input your motherboard model. They will sell you ram that WILL work.

and they guaranty it will work also...there are configurators at www.kingston.com and www.corsair.com as well. You can get the models there and buy wherever you like.

well, i asked my dad where he got the details for the ram he bought, and he said he took one of the sticks out and copied down the information from it, then looked on ebay for it and found 3 different ones. So i dont see that being a problem, since the ram is the same as the others in there :-/
