what is the relationship between CPU usage and the amount of available RAM in any system using windows XP or 2000.

e.g. i am running an excel 2003 lookup on a thousands of rows spreadsheet and it is consuming 100% of CPU usage while almost half of the physical RAM is still available. the calculations seem to take forever so my IT support is telling me i need to increase RAM from 1 GB to 2 GB on my system to make the processing faster. i can't see the logic?

I don't see the logic either. If the CPU is at 100%, there is "adequate" free ram and little paging activity then adding more ram will have no affect.

The only thing that will speed things up is a redesign/review/optimization of your spreadsheet or a faster CPU.

If your IT group continues to push more ram, I would ask them to explain how that is going to help.
